A French Second Empire M1858 Culrassier Troopers Helmet. Polished steel having a peak and lobster tail back edged with brass trim, featuring a high ornamental raised brass comb faced with a spray of laurels above Medusa's Head, with below, a flaming grenade. To the top of the comb is fitted a brass cushion that houses a short red plume, and to the left of the helmet mounted in an ornamental socket, is a detachable hackle of red feathers. A flowing mane of black horsehair is fitted to the rear of the helmet, and the black turban of Buffalo hide is present (95% of the hair remains). Attached by two matching circular decorative bosses is the leather backed chinstrap comprising a series of brass links, worn rested above the peak. Inside, the front peak is lined with green leather, and the black multi tongued leather lining is 60% present.
(There is no corrosion and the entire helmet remains in good order and condition).
Along with a French Second Empire Trooper's Culrass.
This composite set of breast and backplates compliment the above helmet. The breast plate is of polished steel and features the raised vertical ridge nthat was in common use since the early Napoleonic period. Having ten brass domed rivets to the front, these correspond to the L shaped hooks found on the reverse of the armour. Engraved with the maker's Klingenthal details and the date 1829. The backplate of lighter gauge polished steel, engraved with the maker's Klingenthal dated 1832.
